Implementing Some Down Time

Kreg & I are implementing what, I think, is going to be a great idea for the Kell FamilyAt the beginning of each month when we sit down to look at our calendar, we are going to pick one night for a date night (get a babysitter & everything!), and one (hopefully weekend day) for a "Family Fun Day" when we take some time to go do something fun, just the four of us, with no "work" involved!  By no work I mean: no insurance, no photography, and no Air Force Academy. We are entering the part of the year when our "down time" is very rare & precious to us & Kreg is gone quite a bit.  So, having this plan makes me very excited!

We had our first Family Fun Day this past Sunday :) After worship, we had some lunch & drove up to Water World, just the four of us & spent the afternoon playing in the water & riding the water rides!  It was so much fun! It was overcast & we were afraid we might get rained out, but we didn't-- in fact, I think it kept the crowds down, which was nice.  The lines moved quickly & we were able to pack a lot of fun into just a few hours.

After Water World closed, we cleaned up & changed & drove into downtown Denver to the Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner.  This is such a great little place to eat!  It's in the old Denver City Cable Railway Co. building & if you've never been to an Old Spaghetti Factory before... they all have trolleys right in the middle of the restaurant that you can eat inside.  For my little boys who love trains, this was the ultimate.  Trains and spaghetti.  Little Kell Boy Heaven. There was a balloon guy walking around the tables who made Westin a dinosaur. All the way home he kept saying, "Dinosaurs are my favorite! This is my very own first ever dinosaur." I'm sure that made perfect sense in his mind haha! It did start to rain as we drove through downtown, which was perfect.  We need the moisture, I just didn't want it to rain on my Water World parade!  I love being downtown during the rainfalls, though.  It makes me want to pop inside a bookstore with a cup of coffee and just spend the evening cuddled up with the smell of old paper and coffee:)

And so ended our first Family Fun Day :) I'm already looking forward to the next one! AND to my date night, which will hopefully happen next week...

--TIDBITS from this week--
Westinisms:
Me: "Westin-- how's your macaroni & cheese shells?" Westin: "They're good... but they're hot.  I need you to cool them off with your blow thing." :)

His new exclamtion for everything: "Ohhh, so THAT'S why we're talkin!" I have no idea what this means, but it makes sense to him.

He has aquired a Southern accent-- I have no idea how or why! He keeps surprising me with things like this: "I can do it BAH MAH sale-f" and "Mommy! Donald fell into the whale!" (the "whale" was a well... I had to start watching the show to figure out what he was talking about!)
The many faces of my little comedian

Tucker Stories:
(My apologies if you follow me on Instagram & have already heard this story!) I made some cookies the other night & had the second batch sitting out on the counter while the first batch cooked.  Tucker kept watching the ones in the oven signing "please" because he wanted to eat one!  I kept telling him we had to wait a little while. I turned around to do something else and noticed when I turned back around a minute later that he was on the floor next to one of the chairs (that Westin had pulled up to the counter to help me with the cookies) with a handful of dough. Apparently he climbed up onto the chair & helped himself to the dough.  He had a very guilty look on his face and there was a whole uncooked cookie missing from the second batch!

Just-For-Fun:
I decided to start making my own flour tortillas.  This came to be because I was out of tortillas and didn't want to make a special trip to the grocery store to pick some up.  I learned that they're really very easy!  And oh-so-very-yummy!  I have since been using them quite frequently in our meals :) The boys & I used the leftovers the other day to make our own personal pizzas for lunch!  We had so much fun & took them outside to have a backyard picnic!

Kreg, my Dad & my brother have been working on a swing set for the boys over the past few weeks and this week they FINISHED it! (Almost... it still needs a coat of finish, but it is in "playing" condition!) Westin could hardly contain his excitement about having a "park in our garden."  It's already provided many hours of enjoyment and I am so thankful to the boys for getting this project done!
PS-- All of the pictures from this post were taken with my PHONE! I am constantly amazed at my iphone 4s.  And so thankful to be able to carry it around in my back pocket so I can catch all the little "moments" that are gone by the time I grab my "big" camera!

An Impromptu Getaway

The four of us got to take a special little getaway this past weekend!  Kreg's good friend Cole & his wife, Kelsey, invited us to join them in South Fork, CO at a little resort that Cole's family meets up at every summer.  41 years ago his great-Grandparents decided to take their family to the mountains after Harvest for some R&R and they have continued the tradition every year since in the exact same place.  That little tidbit right there just melts my heart! I'm a total sucker for tradition!  There were a couple families that couldn't make it this year so they had some extra space and invited us to join them.  My boys were in outdoor heaven.

We drove in Friday night after Kreg got off work just in time to meet Cole & Kelsey in Monte Vista, CO at the drive-in movies.  I just LOVE drive-in movies!  We saw Brave, which Westin has been quoting ever since.  Kreg & I enjoyed the movie, too... Kreg laughed out loud more than once :)
The boys woke up early, excited to go fishing!

The highlight of our trip was Westin catching his first fish.  He has been fishing with Kreg several times and has watched Kreg catch fish before but never had he caught one on his own fishing pole!

Daddy & Westin

The look of concentration...

Tucker can't wait til he's big enough!
This was such a special moment between my boys for me to get to witness :) The photographer in me wanted to tell them to turn around and get into the shade so I could get some "better" pictures... but I'm so glad I didn't because I would have missed these priceless expressions:
"Woa... look at that!"

So proud. "I did it!"

"Are you proud of me, Daddy?"

Still on cloud 9.

He couldn't stop touching it...

Couldn't take his eyes off of it...

Measuring it

Still very attached to "his" fish

An 11" rainbow
We got to do a lot of other fun little activities while we were there:
Westin feeding the geese

Tucker & Daddy feeding the geese

We took a paddle boat ride

Fun things I did NOT get pictures of, unfortunately, include: a little train ride around the resort (again, Wes was in heaven), lots of yummy food compliments of Cole's family, roasted marshmallows & starbursts, & a lumberjack festival.

Cole's family always does a church service on Sunday morning while they're all together.  The young men take turns leading songs, reading scripture, and preaching.  Westin got to "help" by getting up and saying a couple of his memory verses which made me so very proud! I really didn't know whether or not he would want to "perform," but he did great and was proud of himself!  Maybe he'll be a preacher :)

I was very thankful for a chance to spend some quality time with my boys with a few less distractions than normal.  It's been quite a year so far and our schedules have been very full.  It really reminded me how important it is to take a break from "busy!"

| Boys Update |

I wish I were better about writing down, at LEAST monthly, all the things the boys are in to & saying & doing.  It's been a LONG time since I took the time! That being said, here's some things I don't want to forget about this stage in their lives:

Westin: 3 years, 2 months
{39.5 inches tall, 31lbs (82nd percentile height, 50th percentile weight) }

His Favorite things: Daddy (they really are best buds), Movie: "Horton Hears a Who", TV Show: "Curious George", Book: "David & Goliath" (when Daddy reads it from the Golden Childrens Bible), Food: peanut butter sandwich, Drink: Chocolate Milk (usually made with coconut milk, but when I use almond milk he says, "oooh mommy this chocolate milk is so YUMMY!", Activity: playing cars or trains & going to Bible Class.

Things he's saying: Everything. HA. Sometimes I really am at a loss as to where he picked something up. My most recent favorite "Westinisms" include the following conversations:
"Mommy, we can rebuild our cabin just like Bob the Builder! Can we fix it? YES WE CAN!"
Me: "Westin, would you like to do something fun today?"
Westin: "Yes, can I go to school?"
Me: "Westin, what are you going to be when you grow up?" Westin: "a firefighter. and a prince in a castle.  Oh, and a doctor- uh, a chiropractor."
Me: "Westin, can I cut your hair today?" Westin: "Um, no thanks, I'll just go to the barber."
Things he's doing: Again, everything.  I've noticed lately that I'll try to do something for him and his immediate response is, "oh I can do it." He has a fantastic memory & continues to do great learning memory verses-- this is how he earns his "special treats" :)  He can also quote most of "Horton Hears a Who" which cracks me up...He's doing really well learning to ride his tricycle and little bike and enjoys riding this up & down our neighborhood.  We are hoping to get him into soccer towards the end of the summer and he is REALLY excited about this-- mostly because he's the most social little guy I've ever known.  Clearly he gets this from his Daddy, not his Mommy :) He likes to help me no matter what I'm doing: cleaning, cooking, laundry, you name it... I forget if I have blogged this already -- he could spell his name by the time I got him in for his 2-year-old-check-up as well as knew his shapes & colors & learned all his ABCs shortly thereafter.  I've honestly been dragging my feet to start working on more numbers and phonics, etc., because Kreg & I always talked about waiting until he was 6 to start him in Kindergarten because he has a summer birthday... I'm really afraid if I teach him too much now that he will be bored.  I'm leaning more & more towards letting him learn at his own pace, however.  He loves to learn and it comes very easy to him.  I would love to homeschool him-- I'm praying hard about this, and only want to do it if I can be sure to do it "right." We also have him on a waiting list for a great charter school in our area, which also offers what they call a "cottage school" which allows you to homeschool and have them enrolled 2 afternoons a week to learn 2 subjects-- either math & science or english & history.  We have a little longer to think & pray but I know it will fly by!

Things we're struggling with: taking turns (getting better), grabbing things from Tucker (not really getting better...), having to be asked twice to do something or stop doing something (getting better I THINK. we have good days & bad days). Oh, and kicking. He doesn't really kick things HARD, but he wants to kick everything.  Things, people, dogs... it's very hard for him not to--he knows as soon as he does that he's about to be in trouble but poor thing just struggles with controlling that desire!

What I love most about him right now: he knows no strangers.  We can't go anywhere without him making a new friend! He just loves people!

Tucker: 1 year
{29.25 inches tall & 22 lbs (26th percentile according to the CDC... I prefer the WHO charts for breastfed babies that puts him right in the 50th percentile :) I think pediatricians are supposed to be switching over to this chart, anyway... )}

His Favorite Things: balls, slides, nursing (SLOWLY weaning...), frozen yogurt (Tay Tay's LuLu's!), playing with Westin & Daddy, dogs, being outside, being in the water, helping with the laundry, dragging the hamburger press out of the kitchen cabinet and playing with all the pieces, climbing the bookshelves in the living room, going up and down the little tykes slide, & rolling the gospel chariot along.

Things he's saying: Mammy (love the short "a"), Daddy, doggy, lella (Bella, my mom's dog), Tuck-ey, ink (drink), duck (stuck), NaNa (nurse), Teef (Chief), Mimi, tea, teese (when I want to take his picture), ya (yes), ah-dis ("and this", as he hands me things from the dryer), tee-too (thank you), Tay-Tay or Tay-Ti (aunt Taylor), Nee-Nee (aunt Kortney). He's just within the past week started trying to say just about anything you ask him to-- I love this stage! He also has his own sweet little language that I really want to get on video before its gone... it involves a lot of inflections :) The only sign language I taught him was "please" and "all done" -- what more do you need, right?  I didn't want to overdo it on the signs this time around so he would learn to say what he wants... we'll see how it works.  I'm completely thrilled with how much he's saying because I've known so many second children who don't talk for a very long time!

Things he's doing: WALKING! Started at 11 months but got "stuck" at about 7 steps until the past few weeks.  Now he walks everywhere, even makes complete turns.  It amazes me how quickly they master it once they just "decide" to start.  Points at his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Climbs EVERYTHING. No more baby food-- that really didn't last long at all.  He eats small portions of what we eat & still loves to nurse.  My "goal" age for weaning is 18 months.  Westin was 16 months but by this age had given it up much more than Tucker has.  I hear more & more "the longer the better" and let's be honest, I have a hard time giving it up! He throws balls back and forth with someone (doesn't catch it, but will pick it back up and throw it back). He has six teeth, two on bottom, four on top, and I think I can see some more on the bottom starting to bubble up...

Things we're struggling with: we're starting to see tantrums developing... sigh.  Not  my favorite part of toddlerhood or mommyhood, but we'll get through it :)

What I love most about him right now: his cuddles & the way he smiles at me. He's got a great little personality and does not hide his affection!

I just love being these little boys' mommy! Best job in the world.

To Sweet Tucker

In the hullabaloo of this week, I did not get this posted on Wednesday.  But I didn't want to let it slip through the cracks! I love you, Tucker Kreg!

June 27, 2012

 Dear Sweet Tucker:

Happy birthday, baby boy!  I am so happy you are in our family.  It has been pure joy to get to know you over this past year and I am praying for many, many more!  You are such a delight to everybody who knows you and you have a very special place in all of our hearts.

I knew the moment you got here that you were your own little person and you have proved me right every day of your little life!  You have to be the happiest little guy around-- I love that because it’s extremely hard to be around you and not be happy too.  I’m praying that this part of your personality will stick with you all your life and that you will let God use you as a tool to bless others.

I also love your “go-with-the-flow” mentality.  We are starting to realize that you do have an opinion on things, but as long as you’re with your loved ones, you’re just happy to be here! You are also clearly “driven.”  You want to catch up to your big brother as quickly as possible and you are well on your way!

I love you so much more than I could ever describe in pen & paper.  You are the perfect addition to our family & I can’t imagine the hole we would have if not for you.  I’m so excited to continue to watch you grow & learn & I feel so blessed to be your mommy. I pray that as you continue to become more & more independent that you will know how much you are loved, that you will know joy every day regardless of the circumstances, and that you will have a strong desire to know & serve our Lord.  I also pray that I will be the “right” kind of mother to you & that our gracious God will make up for my weaknesses so that you will be able to grow into the strong, godly leader that He wants you to be. You are my sunshine, Tucker Kreg!

Love,

Mommy

Highs & Lows

What a month.  As I sit down to write this, I feel "heavy."  That's what I told Kreg when I got up this morning, anyway.  I wish I had a better word for it, but that was what came to mind easiest.  I feel like it's been one of those emotional roller-coaster months and I am ready to get off of it and find status quo for a bit! Not that I am complaining... I feel more blessed than ever and I realize sometimes you have to lose status quo for a bit to take a little inventory and realize how blessed you really are.

Let me start with the "highs" :) We have had two very successful birthday parties in my house over the past 6 weeks!  Westin celebrated his third birthday with three birthday parties... oh, boy.  I wasn't trying to be clever, it just worked out that way.  He'd been anticipating his birthday this year and wanted to celebrate with all of his friends so we had his first birthday party with friends this year.  It was a lot of fun :) Wes is very "in" to Curious George, so naturally, that was our theme!

We had all of his friends & their families, as well as some family over to our home on Saturday and we celebrated with cupcakes & banana splits!  AND some brownies & marshmallow pops & chocolate covered pretzels... plenty of sugar :)

Then on Sunday, my family came down from Denver & we did our celebration with them over lasagna and chocolate peanut butter cake with bananas :) and, some leftover cupcakes!

Monday was his actual birthday (May 14th) and we celebrated by meeting Kreg for lunch at Chuck-E-Cheese (his request... and quickly becoming a tradition, as this was the third year in a row that we've done that on his bday).  He had a great time and surprisingly, so did Tucker! Tucker could not get enough of the rides & felt mighty big that he could ride along with his big brother.  I'm afraid I may have another adrenaline junkie coming down the pipe... is that the expression?  I think so... but as I typed it it sounded a little funny, haha!
This past weekend we celebrated Tucker's first birthday! I know its cliche, but I really am having such a hard time wrapping my mind around how quickly this past year escaped us.  Yikes. We had a small, just family, funky Dr. Seuss-themed party at our house :) I had a lot of fun with this theme... being the frugal (okay, cheap) person that I am, I decided I needed to use up all the mis-matched party stuff I had laying around so I bought very few items for this party.  I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, however.  And dare I say it, the cake turned out exactly as I had planned.  That never happens.  But it did this time and I couldn't be happier about it! Tucker loved being the center of attention and I decided he really had paid attention at Westin's party because he seemed like such a pro.  It really hit me that he's quickly phasing into a toddler (by the way, this past month he took his first steps!  it's still not his mode-of-transport-of-choice, but he will walk all the way across the room if you bribe him!) and will not be a baby much longer.  Had to shed a few tears.  He's just a joy, and I am loving every phase with him just like I did with Westin.  There's just no way to slow it down enough to feel like I've FULLY enjoyed each phase.  Is there?

As we were about to start the party, my Dad got a phone call from the Larimer County Fire Department on his cell phone letting him know that there was a fire near our cabin in Estes Park.  He spoke with my grandparents who live next door to our cabin & they had been out but once they got the call they ran back to the cabin in time to see the flames start moving towards our properties. They grabbed their dogs and my grandpa tried to start fighting it with a garden hose but the fire department showed up & told he & my grandma to get out, there wasn't even any time to run inside and get any of their belongings. All through the party we listened to the police scanner and waited for the phone call to find out if our place was still standing or not. No one could see anything through the flames and everyone was evacuated and a barrier was set up.  We were told that our place was on fire but that a helicopter had come in from just down the canyon where it was fighting the High Park fire and was dropping slurry on our cabin as the firefighters fought to put it out-- so we were hopeful!  Our minds kept going to what was inside, what we had left, the little things that had so many memories... but mostly it was just the place itself.  My grandparents bought it almost 50 years ago and it has been in our family ever since.  It was remodeled in 1996 & my parents purchased it in 1997.  Kreg & I have always planned on purchasing it from my parents one day soon.  We got a call later that evening that confirmed that it was a total loss.  Nothing was left standing except the chimney.  We got pictures the next day that made everything much more vivid and my parents & my sister Taylor headed up there yesterday.  Today they were allowed to go in and try to sift through anything that might be left-- they were amazed at the "path" the fire took-- our cabin & my grandparents' cabin were completely destroyed, but there are places across the street that are just fine.  We have been so thankful for all the love that has been poured out on our family. My Grandma (not the one whose cabin was lost) was with me this weekend and, as in just about every stressful situation I've found myself in through my life, had some wonderful words of wisdom that have stuck with me the past few days.  She said, "you know, just like you have to go through an inventory of your home that you lost, it's good to stop and take a spiritual inventory too.  Sometimes it takes a tragedy for us to do that." So I've been working on just that. I've been counting my blessings. And I feel so very blessed. Just a few things that have come to mind:
             - I am so thankful we didn't lose anyONE.
             - I am so thankful we have good insurance.
             - I am so thankful for our memories.
             - I am so thankful they saved so many trees.
             - I am so thankful for the community of Estes Park &               all they've done for my family & neighbors.
             - I am so thankful for my faith, and for my God, the                God of all comfort who who comforts us in all our                    affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who
are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we                ourselves are comforted by God. (1 Cor. 1:4)

There are fires surrounding our home right now-- to the West & to the East & to the North.  Our beloved Colorado is burning. So many homes are threatened, so many people have lost everything, and the heartache we are feeling is just a taste of what so many other people are feeling.

One of the biggest blessings our family received this weekend came while Taylor was going through things.  She found this, still sitting on our mantle.  Such a wonderful reminder of God's faithfulness through anything & everything.  We plan to do something special with it when we rebuild.  Thank you God, for your faithfulness & your comfort.  We know you are mighty to save.
